Interior Design Tips for Awkward Spaces

Awkward spaces call for creative design solutions! Embrace that empty corner, the gap under the stairs, an oddly shaped nook, or under the eaves in the loft and turn…Here are some ideas to show you what you can do with an “awkward space” in your home.

Under the Stairs Cupboards

While stairs are an obvious necessity for multi-storey properties, they commonly take up more of your home than they actually require. There is a wealth of space under your stairs, which can be used for a multitude of purposes. Built in storage for coats, shoes etc. but it can also be used as a utility space.

Under Stairs Seating or Desk area

You can use this area to turn it into a cosy seating area or an open plan home office.

Basements

Under the stairs space can be purposefully built as storage for a basement room, adding practicality and efficiency. This could be useful for any room but primarily for bedrooms or games/movie rooms.

Small Nook

Are you stuck on how to style that awkward space between two walls? Why not create a home office using a worktop and shelves cut down to size making these awkward spaces totally functional for home working.

Open Plan Living

Living in an apartment often means dealing with limited space, and limited options regarding the style and floor plan of your home. Here we see the walls of the home have been added to divide different spaces. In addition built-in storage and shelving could be adopted to use space which would have normally been wasted.

Compact Rooms

Compact bedrooms lack storage, but utilising the doorway wall in these rooms provides different storage solutions which go from the floor to the ceiling, and even encompass a small workspace/dressing table.

Wall Cabinets

Above the bed is generally reserved as a vacant space but can be used in a practical and efficient manner. Here it is covered with built-in joinery, which can be used to house bed linen, and well as your usual bedroom necessities. Another option is to have narrow wall cabinets up to the ceiling whilst keeping the floor space clear which is great for compact spaces.

Boot Room/Pantry

Make a small boot room work harder with smart storage ideas. Baskets tucked into open cubbies help streamline storage with a clean look and easy access. Alternatively, why not create a pantry area using L-shaped shelves which is very simple to do and can provide so much extra storage.

Tight corners

Two cosy reading nooks by the windows have been created here, one is using corner bookshelves over the radiator to add space for books and the other has a statement wall colour and artwork to personalise this small space.

Dining Nook

Above are two great examples of utilising a small corner for a dining area when space is limited...

Loft bedrooms

An awkward nook in a kids' room can be used as a cosy reading space with bean bag chairs....or you can really play on the angles in your space, like in this loft room and create a daybed where you can look out of the window and enjoy the view!
